01Compatibility4
Will your sensors work with my chartplotter / MFD?
Very likely. Our sensors are designed and tested for strict NMEA 2000 compliance and send standard NMEA 2000 messages (PGNs). They have been shown to work with Simrad, Garmin and Raymarine multifunction displays, as well as other NMEA 2000 certified displays.
Your display also has to support the specific data type, for example the pressure PGN 130314. Check your MFD manual’s list of supported PGNs, or ask us before you order.
Do I need an NMEA 2000 network on my boat?
Yes. Our sensors connect to a powered, properly terminated NMEA 2000 backbone. If your boat already has one for GPS, depth or AIS, you can usually add a sensor with one T-connector and a drop cable. If not, a basic backbone (power tap, two terminators, T-connectors and cables) is inexpensive and straightforward to install.
Does it work with SeaTalk NG or SimNet?
SeaTalk NG (Raymarine) and SimNet (Simrad) are NMEA 2000 networks with different connectors. Our sensors work on them with the appropriate adapter cable.
My engine is older and has no electronic engine module. Can I still see engine data on my display?
Yes. That’s what the Single Engine Gateway is for. It converts your existing analog engine senders and RPM signal into NMEA 2000 data, so engine readings appear on your modern MFD without replacing senders or rewiring the engine.
You can also add our standalone pressure and temperature sensors to monitor anything the original gauges don’t cover.
02Installation & setup6
How are the sensors powered?
Directly from the NMEA 2000 network. There’s no separate power wiring. Our sensors operate from 9 to 32 V DC, so they suit both 12 V and 24 V boats, and each has a low load on the network (for example, our DC current sensors are rated 2 LEN).
How do I configure a sensor?
Every AOS NMEA 2000 sensor has a built-in Wi-Fi configuration interface. You connect from your smartphone or computer’s web browser. No app or special software is needed. From there you can name the sensor and set the data type it reports, its instance number, and its zero or calibration point.
Step-by-step instructions are in each product’s How-to-Use Guide on our Downloads page.
I’m installing more than one of the same sensor. What do I need to change?
Give each sensor a unique instance number in its configuration page. For example, set port oil pressure to instance 0 and starboard to instance 1. Your display then shows them as separate readings.
Can I install the sensors myself?
Yes. Most of our customers do. Pressure sensors use a standard 1/4″ NPT thread, so use an adapter if your port differs, and use thread sealer approved for the fluid being measured. Current sensors should be mounted away from strong magnetic fields such as alternators, generators and rotating shafts.
Our team is happy to help you plan an install, including sketches for DIY installers when needed.
What does the blinking LED on my sensor mean?
Most AOS sensors have a status LED. A steady regular blink indicates normal operation. Other patterns mean things like a configuration change waiting to be saved, or a sensor error such as a loose sensor connector. The full list of blink codes is in each product’s How-to-Use Guide and on our LED Blink Guide.
How do I update a sensor’s firmware?
The latest firmware for our pressure, temperature, current and tank level sensors is on the Downloads page, along with data sheets, manuals and installation guides.
03Choosing the right sensor6
Which pressure sensor do I need?
Choose by the pressure range you’re measuring:
- −14.5 to 30 PSI: fuel filter vacuum (Racor-type filters), turbo boost, low-pressure fuel
- 0–100 PSI: engine oil, fuel, water and air. A salt-water version is available.
- 0–200 and 0–500 PSI: hydraulics and marine transmissions
- 0–5000 PSI: high-pressure hydraulics
Each sensor can be set to report as oil, fuel, water, filter, hydraulic, compressed air or other standard pressure types.
How can I tell when my fuel filter is clogging?
Install our −14.5 to 30 PSI pressure sensor between the filter and the engine; a ready-made Racor filter kit is available. As the filter element clogs, vacuum rises. You’ll see it on your display and can set an alarm, so you change the filter before the engine starves for fuel.
Ultrasonic or submersible tank sensor: which is better?
- Ultrasonic mounts on top of the tank, never touches the liquid, and measures tanks up to 1 m (39″) deep. It works with fuel, fresh water, grey and black water, and compensates for sloshing.
- Submersible pressure sits at the bottom of the tank, reads level from liquid pressure with about 2 mm (1/16″) resolution, and suits deeper or irregular tanks.
Either type can be calibrated for your tank’s shape. See the Tank Sensor Calibration Instructions on our Downloads page.
Which current sensor do I need?
Pick the range closest to the highest current on that circuit. Our DC current sensors come in ±10 A, ±20 A, ±50 A, ±100 A and ±200 A. For large house banks, inverters and windlasses, our high-current sensors measure ±300 A and ±500 A on cables up to 4/0. To monitor alternator voltage, current and temperature together, see the Alternator Monitor.
Can I monitor shore power and my generator?
Yes. The NMEA 2000 AC Monitor measures single-phase AC voltage, current, frequency and power. Its inputs are optically isolated from the mains, and it includes a 100 A split-core current transformer.
Can I see whether pumps, blowers or lights are on?
Yes. The 12-Port Digital Input Module reports on/off status for up to 12 devices, such as bilge pumps, blowers, lights, washdown pumps and winches. For analog signals (0–32 V), the 6-Channel Analog Module converts six inputs to NMEA 2000.
04Boat-Pulse remote monitoring4
What is Boat-Pulse?
Boat-Pulse watches your boat while you’re away. It monitors battery voltages, high-water (bilge) alarms, temperature and humidity, GPS position and more. When something moves outside the limits you set, it sends you an email alert. It can also act as an intruder alarm and switch your anchor light automatically.
How does Boat-Pulse connect, and is there a subscription?
Boat-Pulse reports over mobile data or your boat’s Wi-Fi. A limited-time mobile service is included with purchase. After that, continued mobile reporting requires a service subscription. Over Wi-Fi it doesn’t need mobile service.
How do I see my boat’s data?
After activation, we email you a private, encrypted link to your online dashboard, with up to two months of history. Bookmark it or add it to your phone’s home screen. Keep the link private, because anyone who has it can view your data and change alarm settings. You configure the unit with the free “Boat Vitals BLE” Bluetooth app for iPhone and Android.
Will Boat-Pulse drain my batteries?
It’s designed for long-term unattended use. In sleep mode it draws about 15 mA at 12 V, and it has a selectable low-voltage cut-off that puts it into deep sleep to protect your battery and wakes it when voltage recovers.

I have a NMEA2000 Standard Temperature Sensor – Ring Terminal installed on my boat and love it. However, I need to relocate the sensor "box" and to do so would require me to cut the cable between the box and the ring sensor and then re-splice it, if this is possible. It looks like the cable is a Cat 5e ethernet cable. Is it feasible to splice this cable and, if so, any recommendations for how I should do it? For example, I could solder and shrink-tube each individual conductor or crimp on modular ethernet plugs and use a female-female adapter to rejoin them? Also, are all the conductors used in the circuit or just two of them?
It is not an Ethernet cable. It is a 3-conductor cable. The usual colors are red, yellow and black.
